January 7 - No more landfills: Great Lakes region commits to full utilization of fish byproducts

The Great Lakes St. Lawrence Governors & Premiers (GSGP) 100% Fish Initiative has brought the Great Lakes region to near-full utilization of commercially harvested fish, with companies representing roughly 90% of the commercial catch committed to eliminating landfilling of fish byproducts. Through the 100% Great Lakes Fish Pledge, these byproducts are being transformed into valuable products, strengthening regional supply chains, supporting sustainable fisheries, and driving circular-economy innovation. In 2026, GSGP will expand participation, integrate aquaculture operations and fish cleaning stations, and strengthen regional collection and processing pathways to close remaining gaps.

“We’re proving that full utilization is not only achievable, but good for business, communities, and the long-term health of the Great Lakes fishery,” said Dennis VanderSchloot, CEO of VanLandschoot & Sons Fish Market and a member of the 100% Fish Committee.
