July 20, 2026 - Most Americans support conservation – here’s how the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative got politicians from both parties on board too

The Conversation recently highlighted GSGP's protection and restoration work in the Great Lakes St. Lawrence region.

This article highlights the longstanding bipartisan collaboration across the Great Lakes–St. Lawrence region that helped create the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (GLRI). Since 2010, the GLRI has provided more than $5 billion (US) in funding for restoration projects and has withstood multiple efforts to reduce funding or eliminate the program.

As GSGP Executive Director David Naftzger notes, support for the initiative came from "not simply one group or one voice. It was governors, mayors, the NGO community and tribes."
