Cargo Flows in the Regional Maritime System

A new cargo tracking system gives maritime system users a comprehensive view of how goods move throughout the region. This tracking system leverages publicly available information on cargo type, value, and tonnage. Paired with the yearly emissions inventory conducted by GSGP and the International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT), this cargo data helps the region measure and identify ways to reduce maritime transportation emissions.

The “green” advantage of cargo shipping via the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence was a major topic during recent meetings in Antwerp, Belgium. GSGP staff met with officials from the Port of Antwerp-Bruges and discussed ongoing opportunities for collaboration to increase maritime trade between the Great Lakes St. Lawrence region and Western Europe.
