Growing Maritime Trade from Europe
The Great Lakes and St. Lawrence River provide an efficient means of moving goods and people to the heart of North America. A regional delegation recently promoted the benefits of this vital transportation corridor at a maritime trade event in Düsseldorf, Germany, in May. GSGP, the Great Lakes St. Lawrence Seaway Development Corporation and the Port of Antwerp-Bruges hosted this event for European transportation and logistics professionals. Staff from the Ports of Monroe, Michigan, and Duluth, Minnesota, also participated in the program.
While in Europe, GSGP Executive Director David Naftzger and Program Manager John Schmidt also met with representatives from the Central Commission for the Navigation of the Rhine (CCNR) in Strasbourg, France. These meetings focused on opportunities for further collaboration on maritime infrastructure and green shipping, building on GSGP’s 2019 memorandum of understanding with the CCNR.
