Conference of Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Governors & Premiers Commend Administration's announcement of $3 Billion for Lead Pipe Replacement
The Conference of Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Governors & Premiers (GSGP) commends the Administration’s May 2 announcement of $3 Billion for Lead Pipe Replacement. Addressing the dangers of lead exposure has been a shared priority of the Great Lakes St. Lawrence Governors & Premiers, as lead is a highly toxic metal that may cause a range of health problems, especially in young children. As noted in their 2023 resolution on Protecting Against Lead, when lead is absorbed into the body it can cause damage to the brain and other vital organs, such as the kidneys, nerves, and blood.
In their 2019 resolution, the GSGP asked the federal government for increased federal funding to advance the goal of full lead service lines (LSLs) replacement across the Great Lakes St. Lawrence region. Replacement of LSLs is of particular importance as they are typically the greatest contributor to the occurrence of lead in drinking water coming from the tap. These new resources will be used across the region to complement state and local efforts to accelerate lead service line removal, protecting families from lead contamination.
